Boulder Field

Boulder Field, Massachusetts
Competed December 2025

It is by chance that three projects, Boulder Field, Stone Field and Gravestones, are coming to fruition at the same time. Each work has made its own journey to reach this moment. The paths that they have taken go way back.

Making these three works alongside each other has given me a better understanding of the individual works – their connections and differences.

Stones are being collected for Gravestones. The bedrock has been exposed for Stone Field. Boulder Field is completed.

Boulder Field has lived with me since the early nineties – waiting for the right time and place. This finally came in the form of a commission in Massachusetts – a place with many boulders.

A New England field may appear to be a pastoral idyll, but in fact, it is a forum in which enormous struggle has taken place through the clearing of the forest and cultivation of the field. The ground did not yield easily and once the trees had gone, stones had then to be cleared. After the field had been cleared of stones, frost action brought more.

In 2025, stones that have been unearthed over time through working the land have been gathered to make a field of stones. The ‘field’ is contained within a four-sided walled enclosure that can be entered through a small gate for those who feel able to walk over the rough stones. There is nothing inside the enclosure but stone. It is the opposite to what normally occurs when land is cleared – a reminder of what is taken out of a place to make a field.
